"In Honor Dedicated to the veterans of Pocahontas County who served their country in times of war and peace"

I arrived in Marlinton just as an Independence Day parade was stepping off on it's annual march from one end of Main Street to the other. Crowds, commotion, confusion, and a gleeful atmosphere prevailed. I asked several folks where the local memorial was and I got the usual apathetic responses. One man even said, "Veterans memorial? I don't think we have any veterans in this town..." He said this with a straight face even though 60 yards from him there was a contingent of the local VFW leading the parade.
Eventually I found the courthouse - and the cannon in the yard. How can anybody not remember a canon in the yard?
